There are different types of PCI according to the physical attributes and also the technology used. PCI standard bus is gradually being replaced by modified PCI versions called PCI-X and PCI-Express. PCI-X is a double wide version of PCI, which provides up to four times performance boost. It follows similar communication method with the CPU as PCI.
