All printer drums are a key and essential part of a printer. The drum works or its job is to be an image holder of documents in the printer. When you write on the computer and make a command to print the words then it (the drum) makes the whole document into one picture as a reverse image of the document. Then a negative charge is created on the drum as the drum continues to roll as it approaches the toner hopper. Then the positive charged toner element strikes or takes on the image created on the drum. It does this when it becomes close to the paper and when the print cycle is almost complete. Printer drums work differently from laser printers cartridges which is a subject for another post.
