VPN follows a client and server approach. VPN clients authenticate users, encrypt data, and otherwise manage sessions with VPN servers utilizing a technique called tunneling.

VPN clients and VPN servers are typically used in these three scenarios:

1. to support remote access to an intranet,
2. to support connections between multiple intranets within the same organization, and
3. to join networks between two organizations, forming an extranet.

The main benefit of a VPN is the lower cost needed to support this technology compared to alternatives like traditional leased lines or remote access servers.

VPN users typically interact with simple graphical client programs. These applications support creating tunnels, setting configuration parameters, and connecting to and disconnecting from the VPN server. VPN solutions utilize several different network protocols including PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, and SOCKS.

VPN servers can also connect directly to other VPN servers. A VPN server-to-server connection extends the intranet or extranet to span multiple networks.

Many vendors have developed VPN hardware and software products. Some of these do not interoperate due to the immaturity of some VPN standards.

EPROM Chips Importance And Uses

EPROMs are Erasable programmable read only memory chips. This device is mainly used as a memory to store a small amount of data. Some micro-controllers use this memory to store its program contents. EPROMs must be erased before they are rewritten. This is usually done by exposing them to UV light through the window provided on the chip. Exposure of the chip to UV light for longer periods of time can over erase the memory cells of EPROM which may not be readily fixable. Modern EPROM chips have a capacity ranging from few KB's to nearly 8 MB of storage space. To erase EPROM's, they must be removed from the circuit. So, this is not practical in many applications these days. Some versions of Intel 8048 microcontrollers used EPROM in their processors. In the modern world, EPROM chips are at the end of their existence as they are being succeeded by newer type of memories which are practically easy to implement like flash memory.

Surge Protectors Protect Against Power Surges

The surge protector is an important, yet often overlooked part of a computer setup. It allows multiple devices to plugged in to it at one time and protects each connected device from power surges. For example, a home office may have a computer, monitor, printer, cable modem, and powered speakers all plugged into one surge protector, which is plugged into a single outlet in the wall. The surge protector allows many devices to use one outlet, while protecting each of them from electrical surges. Surge protectors, sometimes called power strips, prevent surges in electrical current by sending the excess current to the grounding wire (which is the round part of the plug below the two flat metal pieces on U.S. outlet plugs). If the surge is extra high, such as from a lightning strike, a fuse in the surge protector will blow and the current will prevented from reaching any of the devices plugged into the surge protector. This means the noble surge protector will have given its life for the rest of the equipment, since the fuse is destroyed in the process. While surge protectors all perform the same basic function, they come in many shapes and sizes with different levels of protection. Some may look like basic power strips, while others may be rack mounted or fit directly against the wall. Most surge protectors offer six to ten different outlets.
